Library+

A while back (maybe six months or so), someone mentioned to me that there was a local organization that was basically giving books away.  As it turns out, it's true.  I'm particularly interested in the books that are available on the subject of community development, but, because Sharing the Rock was strongly recommended by a co-worker, I decided to start there.

If you happen to live in Oregon or Siskiyou County, California, check out the Select Books program and find a list of available books here.

Good Reads

For whatever reason, the new year gets me to thinking about books that I'd like to read.  W. Somerset Maugham's Of Human Bondage has been on my to-restart-and-finish-reading list for nearly fifteen years.  My first love, a college boyfriend, was a writer and an avid reader.  He's the reason I read and have since been affected by Dostoevsky's Crime and Punishment, The Idiot, and The Brothers Karamazov.  He's also the one that introduced me to Maugham.  Maybe this will be the year that I [restart and] finish it.  I've also been meaning to read Rob Walker's Buying In for about five years.  My BFA thesis work centered around the concept of how we are defined by what we buy or rather that what we buy defines who we are.  This year, I would really like to delve deeper into this idea and somehow visualize the concept.

Little by Little

I don't really remember how or where, but I stumbled upon Eat Sleep Move.  It promotes the philosophy that those three areas of our well-being are intimately connected and that small choices can lead to big changes.  You can take a quiz and get a personalized plan, which I did, and I also checked the book out from the library.

Although I'm only on day-five and haven't been super intense about it, I did switch up the location of our healthiest foods and put them out in the open.

Now fruit resides on the counter and the bread is just a little more out of sight.  It already seems to be working because yesterday, I ate one banana, one apple, and zero pieces of bread.

Half

It will come as no particular surprise to anyone that I didn't start the year with any particular resolve to do or not-do something new, but I did have a couple ideas for the year.  One hope was that I would get lost in a book like when I was a kid and could spend a whole day, or summer even, reading.  It has been quite some time (years?) since I really got sucked into a novel.

Thank you Rachel of Elephantine for your June favorites.  As usual, I promptly checked all three out from the library.  After a half-year mediocre attempt to find a book that would draw me in, I've finally landed on one and am halfway through.
